A compact blue mudroom features wall-to-ceiling storage and shoe compartments, maximizing functionality in a small space.

At Koa Design, every space presents its own set of challenges and that’s exactly what we love about bespoke work. This recent cloakroom project is a perfect example of how creative design and thoughtful joinery can transform even the most awkward spots into beautiful, practical storage solutions.

The Challenge: No Reliable Wall Fixings

The client wanted a wall mounted coat and storage system with integrated cubbies above and below. But the wall we were working with simply didn’t offer secure fixing points, no studs, no structural timber, nothing we could trust to take the weight of solid ply cabinetry and heavy coats over time.

Our Solution: A Counter Levered Timber Frame

Rather than compromising the design, we created a purpose built internal framework fixed floor to ceiling. Constructed from birch plywood, the frame allowed us to distribute the load evenly and securely without relying on the wall behind. The top section, designed to house five deep storage cubbies, is counter levered off this frame, giving it the strength to hold both contents and hanging outerwear below.

A partially constructed custom wall unit with deep blue shelving is installed along a light-colored wall, with visible wooden framing and tools placed on a nearby windowsill.

Hidden Strength: Wooden Coat Rails as Structural Bracing

A standout feature of this project is the dual purpose coat rails. These aren't just for hanging coats, they're engineered as horizontal braces that help support the weight of the upper cubby units. By tying the vertical frame members together, the coat rails add rigidity and load sharing to the overall structure, reinforcing the counter-levered design while providing everyday functionality.

Flexible Access to Data and Power

The lower section posed a different issue: behind it was a tangle of power sockets, data cables, and network hardware the client still needed access to. To solve this, we built the bottom cubbies into a pull-forward cradle. They sit securely in place for daily use, but can be slid out easily for full access to the wiring void behind.

Materials and Finish

We used our signature birch plywood for both the framework and cabinetry, sprayed in a deep navy blue satin finish for durability and contrast. The grain detail remains visible on the interior framing, subtly showcasing the craftsmanship even where it's hidden.

Design That Works Harder

What looks like a simple piece of joinery is actually a carefully engineered system: part storage, part tech-access, part visual feature. It’s a reminder that great design is about more than appearances, it’s about solving problems beautifully.
